The Bald Eagle
The eagle is a symbol of freedom in America. Ironically it seems that the eagle and America have experienced similar issues. In recent years it is known that America has been in a recession. So has the eagle’s population. They are now on an endangered list. However just like America there has been an effort to rebuild the population. With all these eco-friendly acts being put into action the eagle population is slowly rebuilding just like the United States economy.
The eagle is an honored animal in our society. We hold above most other animals in our culture. In Native American culture the eagle is seen as a deity because of it flying high up in the sky it is considered to be close to god. Almost all tribes use an eagle or its feathers as symbols of importance especially when used for headdresses. It is considered the highest honor for someone to earn a feather in Indian culture. For warriors it is an equivalent to a medal for bravery. If someone finds an eagle feather they aren’t allowed to keep it, it can only be earned. When someone receives there are restrictions on what can come in contact with the feather such as drugs and alcohol. Also the feathers are typically hung in ones home where it can be kept safe.
Indian culture isn’t the only one that recognizes the significance of having an eagle feather. In both the United States and Canada one needs a permit from government conservation officials for somebody to legally own a eagle feather. The eagle is the most important animal to many cultures including are own. They are considered majestic, graceful, strong and is considered to have a special relation to god. Fortunately the eagle population is on the rise again, hopefully the economy will soon follow.
